Understanding Trauma:
Why we React, Shut Down, or Feel Stuck

Sometimes, life leaves marks we don’t fully understand.
I remember sitting with a client, let’s call her Grace who kept asking herself:
“Why does this still affect me so deeply?”
“Why do I shut down instead of speaking?”
“Why do I overthink everything?”
“Why do I feel stuck, even when I want to move forward?”
Most of us assume something is “wrong” with us. But often, what we are seeing isn’t weakness, it’s trauma speaking in the present.
💡 What is trauma, really?
Trauma isn’t just the painful events themselves. It’s what happens inside us because of them.
It’s the wound that forms when an experience was:
too overwhelming
too unsafe
too confusing
And we had to survive in the only way we knew.
For some, trauma comes from something that happened, loss, abuse, betrayal, accidents, violence.
For others, trauma comes from what didn’t happen not being comforted, not being listened to, growing up unseen or unsupported.
Over time, the body learns:
“To stay safe, I must stay quiet, guarded, alert, or invisible.”
Those survival strategies can linger long after the danger is gone.
🔁 Why we react the way we do
Trauma shows up in everyday life as patterns:
shutting down – going numb, going quiet
overthinking – replaying conversations, expecting the worst
people-pleasing – avoiding conflict because conflict once felt dangerous
anger or irritability – exploding when feeling overwhelmed
fear of abandonment – expecting people to leave
difficulty trusting – waiting for something to go wrong
These reactions aren’t random. They are the body saying:
“I’m trying to protect you.”
But the very strategies that once kept us safe can begin to limit our lives, relationships, faith, and sense of self.
🕊️ Healing doesn’t erase the past — it changes our relationship with it
Healing is not pretending the pain never happened. It’s:
slowing down
naming the story with honesty
noticing how your body responds
gently creating new ways to feel safe
inviting God into the places you once avoided
With time, patience, and support, the nervous system whispers:
“I am safe now. I don’t have to live in survival mode anymore.”
And slowly, clarity, peace, and strength return.
